Planescape Torment is an RPG developed by Black Isle Studios. The game utilizes a modified version of the Infinity Engine, which was used in other RPGs of the time such as Baldurs Gate I and II, along with Icewind Dale. This is a game that puts story and dialog first - with combat second. With a great setting and excellent writing, there might be lots of reading during a playthrough but it is well worth it.
Why should this game be played?
This game has been regularly referred to as one of the greatest RPGs of all time. It's story is set in the Planescape multiverse, which is a dungeons and dragons setting consisting of various planes of existence. This is the setting that unifies all of the D&D world, with the Forgotten Realms existing in the material plane and the Planescape Torment story taking place in the outer planes. The addition of a story set within the D&D world, but so far removed from the material plane provides great worldbuilding and context when playing other Forgotten Realm games.
Typical to all Infinity Engine games, players can assemble a party of adventurers and travel through the world partaking in main story and side quest activities. The party composition in Planescape is quite different, and is one of the elements that sets it apart from games like Baldurs Gate. The main character is the 'nameless one', a man who has been cursed with immortality for thousands of years. This doesn't mean that he cannot die, instead when the nameless one is killed, another person in multiverse dies to resurrect him. Once he is resurrected, he often has no memory of previous actions and is reborn with a totally different consciousness in the same body. This leads the character to start to inscribe instructions to his future self in his skin, in the hopes of piecing things together. Other notable party members include a succubus, a floating skull, and an animated suite of armor.
The game has a strong focus on dialog and resolving quests through conversation, rather than combat. There is a combat system in the game that is reminiscent of the real-time with pause systems used in other Infinity Engine games, but most of the encounters a player will experience can be overcome through dialog trees or stealth.
This game provides an excellent story, unique setting and interesting characters. It's a must play for any fan of the D&D universe, or anyone looking for a unique RPG experience.
Where to get the game
The game is regularly sold for around $20 USD on both Steam and GoG, with sales bringing the price down to 60% of that every 4 weeks or so.
Original vs Enhanced Edition
In 2017, developer Beamdog released an Enhanced Edition for Planescape Torment. For anyone looking to play the game on modern systems, this is the version to go with. Beamdog has even released enhanced versions of the Infinity Engine games across multiple other platforms, such as: Switch, Playstation, Xbox, Andriod and IoS. The games can be a little difficult to play on a phone or tablet with touch controls, but its a neat option for those who prefer playing on a more mobile device.
The Enhanced Edition allows the game to run on modern systems much smoother and also includes:
- Remastered music
- Some QoL, like autoloot and better zoom
- Upgraded graphics
Modding Planescape
There are mods available for both the original version and enhanced edition of Planescape. Modding the original version is primarily to allow for quality of life, and ease of running on modern systems, although there are mods that will add some cut content back into the game. Modding the enhanced edition is much the same, increasing QoL in different areas and providing some additional cut content.
