Doom (2016) was developed by ID Software and released in 2016, serving as a reboot of the series. The game is a recreation of the original, expanding the lore of the series and ramping up the action. The game was really well received by critics and players alike, kicking off a new era of Doom games and bringing back many to the series that began back in 1994.

Why should this game be played?

This game is a fast first-person shooter with frenetic combat. Amazing art direction, coupled with a hard-hitting soundtrack sucks the player in to the "rip and tear" mentality. It becomes very easy to loose yourself in a haze of skirting combat arenas while rapidly blowing away the denizens of hell, a great game for entering the flow state.

Set over 13 levels with multiple story beats in-between, the game takes the Doom guy through the mars base and to hell and back as the player tries to stop the invasion of demons into their world. There are multiple bosses spread across the missions, and many open areas to explore. While levels have branching paths and typical halls for combat, players are funneled into open arenas that become locked down until the demonic corruption is purged. These arenas will spawn in multiple waves of enemies, and will result in intense, long lasting fights.

The game provides access to eight different primary weapons with alternative fire modes, and a small upgrade tree for each. Additionally there are limited use weapons, such as the chainsaw and BFG 9000 that are used by finding charges and expending them until more are found.

Where to get the game

The game is available on Steam and is regularly sold for $20 USD, with sales bringing the price down to 80% of that every few months.

Expansion Info

The Steam version of the game now includes all three of the DLC packs previously released. These three packs do not add any single player content, instead adding additional maps, weapons and items to the multiplayer mode.

Multiplayer Mode

Based on comments on Reddit and articles on several gaming sites, by all accounts Doom's multiplayer mode was excellent during it's prime. Unfortunately it seems to have died a relatively quick death, with lots of reports that the mode is a complete ghost town these days. Even if you can find a few folks online, there is now rampant cheating which would absolutely remove all of the fun out of the mode. Perhaps one day is will see a resurgence.
