Baldurs Gate II was the full follow up to the original Baldurs Gate, and it's expansions, developed by Bioware. The game continues on with the formula developed during the first game, but expands on it in both terms of the technology behind the game and the gameplay. Starting shortly after the events of the first game, the story is a direct continuation, even allowing for a character created in Baldurs Gate to be imported into a playthrough of the 2nd game.
Why should this game be played?
If you've played the first game this is an easy game to add onto the to be played list. The technology behind the game is bolstered, with the Infinity Engine being already developed, it allowed Bioware to push improvements such as: increased resolution, 3D model support, and more expansive areas. Much of the core game remains the same, with the underlying ruleset still being driven by D&D 2nd edition rules and the point-click-pause style of play.
Starting the game, players are able to create a character from the ground up, following D&D 2nd edition rules or import an existing character from the first game. The level cap has increased from around level 7 in the original game to upwards of level 14. This is a huge increase in available player power and allows characters (especially casters) access to cool new tools in battle. There are a good selection of class kits available, providing lots of opportunity for roleplaying. Throughout the story up to five companions can join the players party, with many companions being found throughout the game.
The game is a great continuation of an adventure through the Forgotten Realms or for those already familiar with the world and wanting to explore the lore from a different perspective. As one of the CRPGs that helped to revive the genre in the 90's, it's a must play for any RPG lover.
Where to get the game
The game is available on both Steam and Gog for around $20 USD and goes on sale every few months for up to 70% off.
Original vs Enhanced Edition
In 2012, developer Beamdog released an Enhanced Edition for Baldurs Gate, which includes one of it's expansions - Tales of the Sword Coast. For anyone looking to play the game on modern systems, this is the version to go with. Beamdog has even released enhanced versions of the Infinity Engine games across multiple other platforms, such as: Switch, Playstation, Xbox, Andriod and IoS. The games can be a little difficult to play on a phone or tablet with touch controls, but its a neat option for those who prefer playing on a more mobile device.
The Enhanced Edition allows the game to run on modern systems much smoother and also includes:
- Remastered music
- Some QoL, like autoloot and better zoom
- Upgraded graphics
